What is the T-Fal Red Spot?
T-Fal is one of the most well-know and well respected manufacturers of cookware. They have ranges to suit every cook and every household, and it wouldn’t be unexpected to find at least one T-Fal product in every kitchen. One of the main features of the T-Fal range is the famous red spot.
The point of this spot is to let the cook know when the pan has reached its ultimate preheated temperature. However, most of us tend to ignore the spot because quite frankly, we’re not entirely sure how it works.
How Does the T-Fal Red Spot Work?
The red spot is designed to a visual cue to the cook that the pan is ready to start cooking. It is supposed to measure the temperature of the pan and alert the user when the optimum temperature is reached. According to the manufacturer, the optimum temperature to immediately seal in food juices is 190 degrees centigrade.
This alert comes in the form of the changing appearance of the red spot. The spot will transition from a patterned circle to a bright and solid red. The red spot designed to last the test of time as it is included within the non-stick coating applied to the rest of the pan.
What is the Non-Stick Coating?
The non-stick coating applied to all T-Fal pans is created using a plastic polymer called Polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE. This polymer is formed of molecules that contain only carbon and fluorine. This coating has been approved by health authorities in the US, Canada, France and other European countries.
It is completely safe to use because it does not chemically react with food, water or household cleaners, and it is also safe to ingest. It is extremely stable when heated and will not become attacked by acid or alkali bases, so it should last for a considerable length of time.
How Can the Red Spot Enable Healthy Cooking?
The clever little red spot combined with the non-stick coating, provides the perfect pan to whip up some healthy meals. The reason for this is that, the red spot alerts the cook when the pan is at the optimum temperature. Any food added to the pan at this point will become instantly sealed with all of its juices inside.
Because of the non-stick coating, no food will stick to the pan and will cook evenly all over. This is why makes it so great for healthy cooking, because there is no need to add any extra oil or fat. Even when cooking things like chicken or turkey which can become dry easily, oil is not needed, because the natural juices within the meat are immediately sealed in. Here is an example recipe, so you can see how the T-Fal red spot can dramatically improve the outcome of cooking.
Rosemary and Hazelnut Crusted Chicken Breast
For this recipe you will need to have two boneless chicken breasts cut in half. You will also need ¾ cup of toasted chopped hazelnuts, one teaspoon of fresh rosemary chopped, lemon wedges and salt and freshly ground black pepper.
- The first thing you will need to do is to generously season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper.
- Next, you will need to prepare the crust. In order to do this, gather your rosemary and hazelnuts and simply mix together in a shallow dish. Once the two ingredients are thoroughly combined, add the chicken pieces. Add one piece of chicken at a time and rotate it in the mixture so that the nuts cling to the chicken.
- Preheat your T-Fal red spot pan over a medium heat until the spot forms a bright and solid red circle. This should take around 3-5 minutes.
- Finally, when the circle is a solid red, you can add your chicken to the pan. There is no need to add any oil, or butter or any other lubricant because of the non-stick coating. Add your chicken to the pan and leave it to cook for approximately 8-12 minutes. You should turn the chicken at least once during cooking to make sure it is cooked thoroughly in the middle, and that each side is a lovely golden brown. Serve your delicious creation with lemon wedges.
